Miles has over 30 years of teaching experience and has been the Director of Bands at Minnetonka High School since 1997. At MHS, Miles directs 3 concert bands, the pit orchestra, marching band, Advanced Placement Music Theory, and Jazz Ensemble. Miles was the recipient of the Minnetonka School District’s “Celebration of Excellence Award” for Child-Centered teaching in 2009.
Under his direction, the MHS Wind Ensemble has received Superior ratings at the Division I level in the MSHSL large group contest for the past 23 years. The MHS Jazz Ensemble honors include; performances at the Minnesota Music Educators Association convention, The Twin Cities Jazz Festival and the National School Board Association Convention. The Jazz Ensemble has also been featured twice on the radio program “The Future of Minnesota Jazz” and “the Big Band Scene” both of which air on KBEM 88.5. Mostly recently, under the direction of Miles, the Minnetonka High School Marching Band earned first place at the 2016 Marching Band State Championship held at the US Band Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Originally from Maine, Miles Mortensen moved to the Twin Cities of Minneapolis/St. Paul in 1993 and has performed steadily over the last 27 years as a freelance saxophonist. He has been a member of the following Rhythm & Blues bands; “Liberty Street”, “Power of Ten” and “High and Mighty” and the Jazz groups; Stan Bann Big Band, the Century Big Band and most recently the ACME Jazz Company. Miles is also an active clinician and music adjudicator.
Mortensen holds a Master of Music in Conducting from Western Michigan University with cognates in Music Education and Saxophone Performance and Bachelors Degrees in Saxophone Performance and Music Education from the University of Southern Maine.
Mr. Rosen has been teaching at MHS and Minnetonka Middle School West since 2003. He conducts the 9th-grade bands at MHS in addition to teaching courses in Music Technology and American Popular Music. At MMW, he conducts the 6th and 7th-grade bands. Paul also works with the MHS Marching Band, Winter Pep Band, Jazz Too, and Pit Orchestras.
Paul graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire with a Bachelor of Music Education degree in 2002. He earned a Master of Education from Concordia University-St. Paul in 2009 and a Master of Music Education from the University of Florida in 2015. Paul was awarded the Minnetonka “Celebration of Excellence” award for Child-Centered Teaching in 2005.
Mr. Rosen lives in Minnetonka with his wife and 2 children. When not at school, he enjoys creating electronic music, reading, cooking, and spending time with his family.
